Stop Being Cheated Out of Your Money From Large Grocery Chains
Having noticed some higher bills on visits to the store. I must admit I do not check my receipts. It seems we are all in such a hurry these days, can you imgine how much money a cashier really makes each week. To think this has been going on and I can't hardly afford food...
PLEASE THIS IS HAPPEN EVERYWHERE. AND DEMAND A MANAGER. NOW, DURING THESE TRYING TIMES MANY PEOPLE ARE DOING JUST WHATEVER THEY CAN TO SURVIVE. NOW I LOOK MYSELF AND I'LL START AS OF TODAY!
Dear Sis,
During my normal shopping day I bought numerous amount of items, over $175 at a large grocery chain store which is well known, looking down at my receipt I was surprised to notice a mistakes, well everyone makes mistakes right? While the cashier was helping me to move thorough the line. I noticed a cash refund of $60.00. I told her I didn't ask for nor did I want cash and to please take it off. I immediately asked her to call a manager. The supervising manager finally arrived and said I'd have to accept the cash. I said what? I didn't want a $60 cash advance!
I told her, at this point, that If they couldn't/wouldn't remove it, then they would have to return the entire amount of all my purchases and that I would shop someplace else. Well to my shock, the supervisor told the cashier to void out the entire order and was ordered to re-scan everything!
Again, during a second round of rescanning the items again, I looked at the electronic keypad before I signed anything and guess what? Yup, a cash-back of $20 popped up again. At that point I was really upset along with all those folks in line behind me, I told the cashier and she removed the cash refund. The total amount was right for all my purchase, and I feel that I came out right. At this point the cashier agreed that the keypad must be broken.
Furthermore, the cashier must have known the electronic pad was "not working right" because, she at no time, seemed surprised by this mistake. Can you even guess how many folks went through that line, all day before me, and at the end of her day, she propoblyf went skipping home, I must say, she makes better money then all of us with big time degrees, it's called a degree in stealing, where do you learn this, by being street smart for one, many a cashier has pocketed a great amount of our hard earned money and all along I have been yelling that the grocery stores are raising their prices every-time I shop?
My Best girlfriend went to Walmart last week, she laughed and said it wouldn't happen to her...She stood in line, after all her items went through the check out counter, she noticed the store was really crowed, the cashier was starting to rush, then to her surprise the cashier didn't even give her a receipt, what balls. My friend then asked the lady for her receipt, with an annoyed look, the cashier gave it to her. How stupid, she didn't look for two days and just stuck the receipt in her purse. While back at work a few days later she remembered her receipt and we both looked it over, NO surprise here, she was taken just like all of us. this time it was only for $20.00 but it could have been worse.
My friend called Wal-Mart that very next day, Walmart then did research this problem, or this serious allegation, although they did not seem to find or see the cashier take any of the money. Mary, my friend, then decided to called her sister, who at this time was working for another large chain downtown as an account, and this is what her sister told her: "This is a new thing, and a big time stealing trick, the cashier will note the amount that she wants to steal, then she will hand off the cash back to her/his friend who is standing in the line, gee scary.
It's time for us to all wake up, right there and right then look for errors, also when using credit or debit cards it seems to happen the most! This is NO joke, our economy is creating thieves who are working as cashiers at Wal-Mart, although they are one of several, they are still the largest retailer, this is why they have the most of reported cases. I am adding to this. My husband and I were in Wal-Mart North Colorado Springs and and paying with our credit card when my husband went to sign, he stopped short when he saw, just seconds before he signed on our credit card; he just happen to notice there was a $20 cash back added on our receipt, so be aware my friends.
Jim, who is usually a very quiet guy; told the cashier, in no uncertain terms, that he did not ask for nor wanted cash and she said that maybe the machine has been messing up and she canceled it. We really didn't think anything of it until it came out in the newspaper. I know and understand very well how many "seniors citizens" or busy parents have been, or will be, "angered" by this one?
To make matters worse ...this Trick can and will be done at any location anywhere, so check your receipts now!

Unbelievable, thanks Darlene for the heads up, I never check my receipts but am definitely going to start.
Good hub Dar, this is not an issue for me I've always been on top of anything that has to do with my money. I know what I'm spending and watch them like a hawk. Peace girlfriend!! Tom
Darlene Sabella. Hi. Thank you for all this great information and the heads up on the stores.
I think we have a couple of Wal-Marts here in Australia, but have never shopped there.
We do most of our grocery shopping at Safeway or Coles, they are no better, over charging mainly.
Will be checking my dockets on a regular basis from now on.
Thank you again.This is a great hub.Voted up.:) :)
Wow! Another great hub from my favorite Hubber. Thanks for an important heads up. I will definitely check my receipt for now on. Rating this hub up for sure.
Dear Darlene, When will the scams stop? I usually check my receipts, but I will definately check them more closely, now! Voted up and useful! Peace to you today and everyday.
This type of thing has been going on for a very long time. Just imagine how much extra cash a store takes in by miss marking even one item. When I have picked up on a mistake like this and reported it to the manager, I have to say it rarely is ever corrected. I guess it is way too profitable for the store to give up a scam that works more often than not.
Darlene, this is a great hub! The same thing happened to me several months ago but with a twist! I HAD asked for cash back but, the $20.00 never reached my hands. There was much "yaking," and joking and looking all over the place by the cashier taking my attention away from the receipt and LACK of $20.00 bill...it wasn't until later that day when I reached into my purse to get the $20. and it wasn't there. I searched everywhere and then returned to the store. I registered a complaint w/the manager...the problem was = how could I PROVE it? Of course, I couldn't but, luckily, that cashier was caught several days later doing the same thing so the manager called me in and handed me a $20. knowing that I was telling the truth. The clerk, of course, was fired. Great "411" to look out for the larger stores!
You have provided a public service with this hub, Darski. Most of us are so busy rushing around from one place or a thing to another, we don't really concentrate enough when purchasing something with our credit card.
Stop and read the receipt or the cashier's screen BEFORE YOU SIGN.
Thanks for reminding us. :)
God bless you Darski. When exactly did the US of A become the United Scammers of America, or the United States of the Apathetic. I have seen so many scams. I saw one for wives of vets, no doubt. A statue is made of a soldier holding a "rifle" with machine gun bandoleers wrapped around him. He looks manly but it's a false image to anyone who served. America is home to the thief, unfortunately.
I dislike the "cards" that give you discounts. You have to have a card for every store. It's a money maker for the store and another unfair "tax" if you don't have the card.
I could write a book Darski. God bless you dear!
Well done darski on writing a hub that needed to be written
Thank you so much for sharing and I'm sure this hub will be so useful to many.
take care

Good information from you, Darski. I never visit Wall-Mart before, because this isn't exist in my country. WOw....$175 for only shopping and it's normal for you. This is big money for me. I usually spent just $40 for monthly shopping at supermarket with my mom. I got everything from this money. Like: rice, sugar, oil, salt, flour, soap, toothpaste, instant noddle, four bags of tea, instant coffee, shampoo, etc. I never imagine I got cash refund from my shopping. You have wonderful experience. Thanks for share with us. Vote up. Take care!
Love and peace,
Great Hub Darlene! I too am guilty of looking the other way when it comes to receipts. It's not just the extra time it takes, I usually shop at the same stores and I assume that "they" would not cheat me. I will now check each & every one - Can't afford NOT to! Good job!^^
Good to know, I have a great attention for detail and find watching the checker scan and look at the charges as they show on the screen is possible. They always seem to be careful once they realize your watching...
Thanks for giving us the facts on being ripped off at the checkout! Love you Darski! :)
Darsky, It seems like you just have to be careful everywhere you go anymore. I try to watch my groceries as they ring up because I've often found the prices are correct. I've never got cash back when I did ask for it; that's a new on me. I'm glad you wrote this hub is I'm going to stay alert when I'm in the stores. Love and hugs girlfriend.
Great hub....we are definitely going to watch our receipts from now on....thanks so much! :)
It definitely happens! You have to watch to make sure you are really getting the "buy one get one free" or "half price" offers too. I notice that those often are missed at the cash register.
Goodness!, thanks for the info!
I am not at all surprised, although I have not had this particular incident happen. I always check my receipt because I have had a cashier ring one item up several times. I try to get a rough estimate for the amount before I ever check out, but I know sometimes time is a factor especially when it is really busy. You are always looking to help out and do a wonderful job! Voted up, useful and awesome!
Yes I always check my receipts and change now. I find it is the bigger stores that make a so called mistake. It is never to the customers advantage though. Always to the store.
I believe this is how they pay for their so called special offers. Yes the items are cheaper in the big stores but only if you are charged the correct price. Always check your recipts. Great hub for highlighting this practise
I like that hub its very informative , thanks for sharing it.
Very informative information. I am constantly watching the register and receipt. Often I find something that doesn't add up. I haven't asked for cash back in a very long time. This all makes a person think.
...well I always love the eclectic nature of your hubs Darlene - you are literally all over the place and with so much pertinent information to offer too - you have the heart of an ombudsman and the mind of an investigative journalist - and yes I am never cheated out of my money here - in fact at your hubs I always get my money's worth because you my friend are just simply priceless!!!!!
Mom, very nice article and will look at my receipts every time I shop. Love you!
Thank you for a great warning because what is over there will be here too soon. My father always said crooks never run out of tricks.
Definitely good tips for all of us - I never heard of such a thing! Thanks for bringing it to our attention and go girl!! I love people who stick up for themselves!!
Wow thats Marvelous stuff ,you highlighted very common issue ,it happened with lot of people almost everyday ,it can any where,i think its our fault we should check before leaving .Thanks my dear
Holy cow that's creepy! I am a big-time receipt checker, but I will be sure to tell my less-cheap friends about this! How scary is that? Thanks for the information!
Solid stuff here, Darski; voted Up, Useful, & Awesome.
I haven't had that precise scam hit me--and I do, at least 99% of the time, check the receipts (after this article, you can bet it'll be 100% of the time from now on). But I also have the habit of mentally adding up cost as I add items to the cart...which isn't always spot on but would "flag" a $20 hit in half a heartbeat.
However--speaking of Wal-Mart--we did have a real money mess for a while when Pam & I lived in Montana. Our closest Wal-Mart was in Butte; I picked up a few things there at least twice a month.
One day Wal-Mart, unbeknownst to us, had a major computer glitch going on with their own credit card processor. It was too blatant to have been a scam, but the results were pretty horrendous just the same. I'd bought $300 worth of goodies that day, using our bank debit card...but their credit card processor AUTOMATICALLY ran that amount through, not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES.
Okay, so we had more than $300 in the account prior to this hit--but a fair bit shy of $900!!
We found out a couple of days later, as the bank started hitting us for overdraft charges (this was during the years when they could "go over" what you actually had in the bank--that's illegal now, thankfully, so the charges do stop when the account is empty...NOW). The charges? In the area of $200 every five days....
Wal-Mart was actually quite embarrassed and got the "extra $600" backed out of there within a day or two after I started screaming at everybody in sight--but NOT BEFORE that. Which was interesting.
As for our oh-so-wonderful bank? (Which we still use, believe it or not.) Oh, I had to sit down with the local bank manager for a LONG time before they finally agreed to rescind the $400 ($200, and then another $200) they kept applying to my "overdrawn" account.
Sound advice, Darski. I'll have to be more cognizant at the grocery store. I have noticed the price of a lot of regular items steadily rising. Kinda scary. Thanks and cheers.
Excellent subject to write about. Thank you for bringing this to everyone's attention.
I just got almost "hit" by such a cash-keeper again just a few days ago in Bank of America in Columbia, SC. She was very sweet talking about weather etc. and I was cashing a check. Then she asked me "How else can I help you?" and no cash followed, so I reminded her that she could help me a lot if she would give me my cash. This is the 4th time, as the least and I rarely go to BofA to cash checks! It seems like every second time I go there I get such attempts to cheat me out of my cash. ;-) I think the time has come to begin reporting such ladies to the management.
Regarding Walmart etc. I always check my receipts and the only cash back they ask me if I want up to $50 in the USPS and some stores and they give me the cash, so no problem there, but some times I notice a different price at the cash register than at the shelf. So I tell them to fix the price.

I honestly have not read the whole blog. I personally never shopped at Wall-Mart and never will. Wall-Mart supports child labor through it's suppliers and producers in south-east Asia. If you are okay with children working 16 hour days, 7 days a week for about 16 cents an hour then, sure - shop at Wallmart.
