Death Valley - Euthanasia, Let Me Hear Your Opinon?

Euthanasia, Let Me Hear Your Opinon?

Are You Scared to Talk About This?

Euthanasia, Do You Have an Opinion?

During an intense interview with Dr. Jack Kevorkian, he said, “Anybody who’s facing imminent and unavoidable death should be given the choice to die humanely in an acceptable environment. This is self-determination…based on the autonomy of the person’s life. Thus, is Dr. Kevorkian a hero who helps suffering people end their misery with dignity…or a villain who has usurped the almighty power to decide who should live.”

Thousand of people have come face to face with an incurable disease, and for many they know they’re going to become helpless, as well as, the medical cost to their loved one will be great. Historically, this subject is so taboo that to even to write about this subject, resonates a vibration of discomfort, not by me, but for concern about the people who will be reading this article.

It’s similar to trying to tell people they should write a will, a living will and they just don’t want to discuss it. It’s this a big secret. Yes, we will all die someday, just as there is a new bloom of a beautiful rose that shines bright with the shear sight of it. An awesome rose, which will slowly fade in a matter of days, then weather away and die. We celebrate a birth of a new child, even though; this child will grow up and die. The wise words are, “it is the journey that counts.”

We are the only creatures on this planet that is AWARE!…To be aware of this can be a very painful experience, what is the point? Why are we here on Earth, what is this all relating too? We will be gone in a blink of an eye. So why is medicide (Dr. Jacks, word) in special cases so illegal? There are a few states now that have euthanasia now, legal with a terminally ill patient. They can decide the time, once the pain becomes too hard to bear. The only real issue here is a personal issue, a choice, not a courtroom battle or a religious forum.

Now, imagine a person that has Alzheimer’s disease, there is a summit of no return, when you will never recollect anyone close to you, you will develop into a person too difficult to handle and when it become to demanding on your family, you then are dispense over to strangers to care for you in a sad and strange home. If, you know the pending out come of this nasty disease, you can plan ahead before you disappear. It’s like you see fog up ahead of you, over time the fog get’s closer and closer to you. When you start to enter the fog, it becomes hard to see, and sound seems to be coming in all directions. Then you get lost in the fog, and disappear, never to be seen or heard from again. You died in that fog, you lost who you are. Why would anyone want to put their family or themselves through this?

All I am doing is weighing and lumbering in this hub and asking questions, to nudge you to think about this subject. To make a wise comment in this great debate of the ages, SUICIDE, is what many call this. So, why are we bothered so much about what this? Some strangers’ choice to choose his/her time of death? Why is our medicine in the stone ages? Why an adult human being in sound mind in body being told they are breaking the law if they want to die? Dr. Jack, talks a lot about using their good organs to save lives. Life of the people who want to live and who are healthy, where a new organ can bring a quality of life back to them.

We have all lost loved ones; some have affected me in such a profane, way. I have watched friends and family with the worse cancer, fight so hard for life. Why, when the outcome is inevitable. Why do people what to live, even in when their last few months, by taking Chemo, this is so toxic and causes them to be deathly sick? I am talking about quality of life. Every person can’t live to be 101 years old, individuals who do live that long, make it on the front page of the news paper.

Finally, I want to convey my curiosity over this area under discussion, and why so many countless people call it a sin, why is the state implicated in our personal planning of our lives. What is it that makes this topic so heated? Don’t get me wrong, I am all for life, however by writing this hub, it gives me an opportunity to think out load, I am a straight shooter and when I get a brain wave, I like to get answers, to be honest I am perplexed.

Very interesting and disturbing hub. If a person truly doesn't want to live any longer, I believe we need to help them.

Yes, that is compteley true, we are only talking about the people who would like to have a choice. Thank you Pop for reading and commenting on my article.

This one makes you think. And, as breakfastpop wrote above, it is also a disturbing one.

My big concern with euthanasia, besides religious concerns about the sanctity of life, is the temptation for heirs and other interested parties to let financial considerations influence their decision to encourage euthanasia for a critically or terminally ill person.

The cost of medical care can rise sharply for someone who is critically or terminally ill and by dying these costs cease. Shortening life by a few days or weeks can have a noticeable impact on the size of an inheritance, especially one of modest size.

For wealthy people (and where taxes are concerned, "wealthy" can often include average middle class people) estate and inheritance taxes (so called "death taxes") and the constant fiddling with these taxes by Congress is another complication where there can be a significant tax savings if a person dies before a certain date.

Finally, there are also the medical cost savings issues that were brought up during last Fall's health care debate. If euthanasia becomes accepted by the public it will be easier for bureaucrats to convince people to save the government money by dying sooner rather than later.

However, very good job on an emotionally and ethically difficult subject.

P.S. I am now working on Hub 4 of my 30 Hubs in 30 Days

Thank you Chuck for your wonderful comment, I am only talking about the right to have a choice, a person must be of sound mind and body during the meetings with the phyics and doctors, this would not be a choice once a person gets to close to the fog.

Darlene - Awesome hub, a powerful and thought provoking subject. Love your style of writing. Thanks for opening yourself up and sharing your thoughts with the world.

You touched upon a lot of controversial, ethical and moral questions; a very deep subject to ponder. Thanks for bringing it to light.

I personally go back and forth on this subject. I have witnessed some terrible suffering in my life. Every case and every individual is uniquely different and should be treated as such. When it comes right down to it, I guess I tend to think, each and everyone of us should be given the freedom to choose.

Great job,

Sage

What a courageous hub.I have pondered that question for years.I have spent much time with the elderly and have seen them wither away to nothing.Sometimes knowing their own outcome. Would they have been better off taking their lives?I know half would of made the choice.I can not say the time spent in the end of there lives was nice. Some how I just don't know.I guess I am glad I am not in the position of deciding.I love life so much and I think If it was my choice to make for my life I would stick it out to the end even if suffering terribly.

I've watched a documentary of a man who was suffering and losing his ability to use his body, he and his wife flew to another country and received assisted suicide as they called it. I'm all for it, the man would have suffered greatly as would his wife and children. Death is unavoidable so why do we deny it's power in the very face of death? Bless us one and all... Peace :)

I am 100% for the choice of ending one's life in a humane way. I know if I was suffering and in pain everyday...why would I not want to die in a peaceful and painless way with the people I love around me. It only makes sense.

...well Darlene you have the heart and mind of a hard hitting investigative journalist - you certanly don't blink in your writing and you are not afraid to tackle difficult subjects head on and provoke your readers at the same time. The Hub needs more strong voices like you - and you are definitely at the vanguard of this movement and I would imagine that you are paving the way for others to follow - bravo to you and your visions, your passions and your integrity as someone who cares!!!!
